Mesa Verde
This 52,000 acre park in southwest Colorado is the largest archeological preserve in America. It contains 4,000 known archeological sites where you will find numerous artifacts of pueblo cultural artifacts. Of special interest are the mysterious Anasazi cliff dwellings which were built in the 13th century.
The cliff dwellings are huge ornate villages built in to the walls of the canyon. When you visit, be sure to tour the Chapin Mesa Museum where you can learn about the area’s history. You can visit several of the sites, but be prepared for a bit of challenge in reaching them. Some of the sites are open all year and others require a ranger guide.
